Pista (Thoronai) : Movie Review

May 31, 2009

Vishal’s latest film “Pista”-a bilingual in Telugu and Tamil (“Thoronai” in Tamil), under the banner of GK film corp is what almost every film maker promises to deliver. If a commercial cinema is expected to have action, emotion, sentiment, romance, comedy, visuals etc., then this film has just about everything . Directed by Saba Iyappan and starring Vishal, Shriya, Prakash Raj the film is about Muralikrishna and his search for his long lost brother.

Muralikrishna (Vishal) is a happy go lucky guy by nature and together with his friends he creates havoc in his village. His life takes a new direction when he promises his mother to bring his long lost brother back. The trail takes him to Vishakapatnam, a city which is reeling under the mafia rule of  Surya Prakash(Prakash Raj) and Guru (Kishore). Muralikrishna becomes the witness in a murder case and he’s threatened by both the gangsters. He falls in love with  Indu (Shriya) and eventually his love is reciprocated. Krishna almost finds his brother but the sudden discovery of a tattoo changes the course of the film. Did Krishna find his brother? Will he be able to outsmart the two gangsters? This forms the rest of the story.

Vishal has a well written role in this film and thankfully he doesn’t disappoint. He knows his strength and limitations. If you are someone who watches a movie only for songs and fights, then this flick is “The Holy Grail”! Awesome choreography in both dance and stunts which stand out further owing to Vishal’s excellent flexibility with his moves. Shriya is a major revelation here. OMG! She looks extremely gorgeous especially in the songs and is a visual treat. The toned look and the abs work wonders and the film makers ensured that she stands out as one of the highlights of the film. Prakash Raj is good as a menacing villian who would stop at nothing to achieve his goals.  Kishore is good as the other gangster. Ali, M S Narayana, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Telengana Shakunthala, Kondavalasa, Suman Shetty and Krishna Bhagwan do justice to their respective role in the comedy segment.

The basic outline of the story about a hero finding his long lost brother is pretty similar to the 2008 flick “Singh is King”. But in “Pista” the execution is totally different with a strong South Indian flavour. Some of the visuals shot in Ladakh (Kashmir) for a song are stunning and in rest of the scenes the Cinematography is pretty good. Editing is crisp. Music by Mani Sharma is nice. The introduction song, the song shot in Ladakh are something to watch out for. And finally the direction by Saba Ayyappan is good in parts.

But in the end, despite all the ingredients of a commercial potboiler the film just about manages to be an average one. The major problem is the screenplay and I presume the film makers were too concerned about retaining the interest levels of the audience. And the result is so extremely predictable. Fights and songs appear once every 15 minutes without fail. This flip-flopping of a sloppy screenplay is the only thing which acts against this film and that turns out to be a knock out punch! Vishal’s earlier films like “Pandem Kodi” and “Pogaru” have been received well in Telugu. Maybe this film will be too owing to its commercial mass entertainer tag.

Watch this film for Vishal’s dance/stunts and Shriya’s glamour. The hoardings across the city definitely don’t lie!…But don’t spend much. I saw this flick for 30 bucks!!..:)

P.S: What’s with the damsel’s new avatars these days?! Tamannah, Illeyana and now Shriya! Phew!
