The name is Bond….Vagabond!

March 21, 2009

Mark Twain once said, ““Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Of course, the choice about when you want to start is entirely upto you. Of late, thanks to twitter, I have come across some wonderful people, websites and a lot more stuff about Travelling. Here’s a snippet of how things have been so far….

Everyone in their respective lives comes across a point, where they just see things differently. The zeal to learn something new more or less turns into a passion. Eventually people hit the road. Travelling to places that are not only ecologically diverse but also culturally rich is bound to have a profound effect. The realisation of how little we know about each other is sometimes overwhelming and rightly so. But the experiences and memories of those new places replaces the void and claustrophobic nature of our lives. If you ever come across a chance to hear stories from those who have travelled far and wide, never never miss them. Such stories are most of the times fascinating and charming. More than anything else, they are the ultimate source of inspiration. Although I have come across quite a few travellers who write and share their experiences via blogs, I have found these few to be the most inspiring.

1. Gary Arndt–> He has been travelling around the world since 2007. An excellent blogger, Gary writes about the places he has visited with exquisite brilliance (His blog has also been nominated for Best Travelouge in the 2009 Lonely Planet Travel Blog Awards). Till now, he has travelled across Oceania, South East Asia extensively. Currently he’s in Jordan, Asia. Read more about Gary and the places he has travelled to on his blog–>Everything-Everywhere. You can follow his updates on twitter (@ EverywhereTrip)

2. Lisa Lubin–>  Lisa is a triple time Emmy Award winning TV producer who quit her job to travel around the world. She has just completed that trip after having travelled for almost 2.5 years. I came across her blog while I was surfing through another travel website MatadorNetwork where one of her articles about how to spend a week in Spanish countryside for free was published. Thanks to her, Volunteering abroad and Couch Surfing are two things which I tend to read and explore more than ever before on the internet. She currently lives in Chicago, USA and writes on her blog Just a girl in the world… and you can follow her updates on twitter (@llworldtour)

3. Christine Gilbert–> Another solo traveller who has been writing about her journey. If you are looking for some insight on Caribbean and Central America, then she’s the one with tons of stories. Her blog is a great source of everything you wanted to hear about travelling, the eagerness, enthusiasm, fear of travelling alone among many other things. Christine writes about her journey on her blog Almostfearless and tweets on twitter (@ almostfearless)

4. Kim Mance–> Kim Mance, based in Chicago, is the founder of TBEX, the editor-in-chief of and a host at Her articles and updates on twitter bear testimony of her love for travelling and people. One of the best travel writers I have come across so far…she tweets (@KimMance)

I think, I have come across a lot more travel writers over the past few weeks. The latest addiction, apart from all these blogs, is however a Travel Community, MatadorNetwork. This site is home for some of the most interesting articles about travelling, be it Volunteering abroad, or teaching english abroad, how to travel around the world for free and so on…Amazing stuff, don’t forget to add that site to your blogroll.

Wait. There’s a lot more which adds to the addiction. Couple of months ago, the Tourism Department of Queensland, Australia had invited entries for the Best Job In the World. And right now, 50 applicants have been shortlisted from over 34000 entries. The one minute introduction clips of those 50 applicants leaves you stunned…especially after you see that few have actually travelled all across Africa, Arctic Circle, Antarctica and the world in general. It’s very difficult to say who’s the best of the lot…it can’t get tougher than this! Check out the videos of the applicants @

After reading all those wonderful travel stories, at the end of the day, all I can say is…”Wish I could do something like that someday!”. The quote by Lin Yutang, ” “No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow,” keeps reverberating in the mind. All the time. Echo…Echo…Echo

P.S: If you have come across some great Travel blogs and writers, please do let me know or leave a comment.
